In this lunchtime talk, we’ll use the beleaguered musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark as a case study to explore how disability is central to but disavowed by a Broadway industry that demands athletic “triple-threat” performers. Julie Taymor’s blockbuster musical cost an eye-popping $75 million–the most expensive Broadway production in history. The tangled web that emerges is a story about how the relentless pursuit of performing Spider-man’s fictional hyper-capacity disabled multiple actors during the production’s run.
